District Science Leaders Community of Practice (DSL CoP): The District Science Leaders CoP is designed to bring together science leaders from districts and school sites across Region 10 to strengthen the implementation of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) in response to data from the California Dashboard. Grounded in Powerful Task Design by John Antonetti, our work will emphasize the design of science learning experiences that promote engagement, collaboration, and rigor for all students.

As a science leader, you play a key role in identifying and reinforcing vital behaviors that support strong NGSS-aligned instruction in both elementary and secondary classrooms, including the vital behavior of using the Science Interim Assessments.

Evidence-based instructional practices will guide our efforts to build the capacity of site administrators and teacher leaders. These practices, supported by the use of Science Interim Assessments as both formative tools and instructional drivers, will deepen regional NGSS capacity.

We envision that leaders will return to their districts and sites equipped to share, model, and support the implementation of high-quality science instruction, which includes building capacity, implementation resources, professional learning, and walking-to-learn protocols.

A "district science leader" is a teacher, department chair, instructional coach, or administrator designated by the district or site to serve as the lead representative for science education. We recommend that the leader attend these meeting with their implementation team to represent the various grade levels in their district or site.

Who Should Attend These Meetings:
TK-12 district Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math Education (STEM) leaders, school site leadership for both elementary and secondary sites, and non-formal science leaders.
